Joseph Root was born on 28 February 1769, in Northampton, Hampshire, Massachusetts, United States to Joseph Root and Eunice Clapp. He married Martha Russell on 25 December 1794, in Northampton, Hampshire, Massachusetts, United States. They were the parents of at least 5 sons and 5 daughters. He died on 28 December 1844, in Norwich, Windsor, Vermont, United States, at the age of 75, and was buried in Pompanoosuc, Norwich, Windsor, Vermont, United States.
