Biography

From census records, we know that Mary Russ was born to William J. Russ and his unknown wife about 1879 in Marion County, Georgia. As discussed in Lois Jewell Guy’s profile. Marion County was composed of mostly small farms where farmers probably struggled to take care of their usually large families. A bad crop or a drop in crop prices would mean hard times for the family. I’m sure the Russ family and the Guy family would have experienced many hardships during their lives.

Mary Russ married John T. Guy on April 12, 1896, and their family starting growing. My grandmother, Lois Jewell Guy, was the first born on November 30, 1897, while they were living in the Tazewell District (discussed in Lois Jewell Guy’s biography). She was followed by Mittie L. Guy on November 27, 1898, Nellie Guy was born on February 16, 1901. Next, John Cleveland Guy was born on October 30, 1903, in Marion County, Georgia. Angie Guy was born on May 12, 1906. Richard Levy Guy was born on August 10, 1908, in Meriwether County, Georgia. Nina Mae Guy was born on October 4, 1913, in Thomaston, Georgia. Lastly, Mamie R. Guy was born in 1916.

The death date for Mary Russ is not known, but it is believed she died before 1920. She is not listed on the 1920 U.S. Federal Census with her family.

When I was growing up, Georgia was said to be #1 in moonshine, and I had 1st cousins once removed involved in “making liquor”. Those cousins were John and Mary’s grandchildren. It makes me wonder if their moonshine skills were passed down by John, Mary’s husband.
