Princess Charlotte of Saxe-Meiningen was born on 11 September 1751 in Frankfurt. She was the eldest child of Anton Ulrich, Duke of Saxe-Meiningen, and Landgravine Charlotte Amalie of Hesse-Philippsthal.
She married Ernest, Hereditary Prince (later Duke) of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg on 21 March 1769 in Meiningen.
Like her husband, Charlotte was a patron of astronomy. She also participated in observations, and in the First European Astronomy Congress in 1798 at the Seeberg Observatory. She corresponded with leading astronomers of her time.
She died on 25 April 1827 in Genoa in the Kingdom of Sardinia.
