Biography

The biography of Jacob Sayler's son Reuben Sayler (4-59 from 3-15) in Sayler, James Lanning, A History of the Saylor family by James Lanning Saylor:
Reuben Sayler, father of John Sayler, was born July 4, 1818, in Frederick county, Md., was self-educated and followed successfully the occupation of a farmer. He married Hannah Smith, who was born in 1821, in Frederick county, Md., and who was a daughter of Samuel and Catherine (Linn) Smith, the Smith and Linn families being of German ancestry. Mr. and Mrs. Sayler settled on a 160-acre farm in Frederick county, Md., and there passed the period of their active lives. They then retired to Union Bridge, in Carroll county, where, after twenty years, Mr. Sayler died in 1878, [1]

24.Reuben4 Sayler (Jacob3, Daniel2 Seiler II, Daniel1) was born July 04, 1818 in Near Union Bridge, MD, and died April 07, 1888 in Near Union Bridge, MD.He married Hanna Smith 1839.She was born November 03, 1819, and died October 09, 1899. Notes for Reuben Sayler: Born on farm, on Beaver Dam, in Johnsville District, Frederick County, MD. He was reared on this farm and had but meager educational advantages.Withal, however, he became a very successful business man and was possessed of more than usual intelligence. After his marriage in 1839, he lived at Johnsville for eight years. At the end of that time he removed to the farm of Ephriaim Haines, near Union Bridge, the property later owned and occupied by Daniel Wolfe's daughters. Here he toiled with unflagging industry for ten years and then purchased the home place, later in the possession of his son Rueben. He spent nine years here and then because of continued ill health forced him to retire from active business. In 1868, the year in which the Western Maryland Railroad extended its line west of this point, he moved to Union Bridge. In 1873, the town was incorporated and Mr. Saylor was elected its first mayor. It was during his term of office that all the streets of Union Bridge were named and located. He thus became identified with the interests of the growing town, and during the 20 years that he lived there he was an active citizen in all that pertained to the prosperity of the place. He at one time also held the position of school commissioner of Carroll County. He was a Democrat.Mr. Saylor died in Union Bridge in 1888, and is buried at Beaver Dam German Baptist Church. He was not a member of any religious body.
