Samuel was born in 1816. From the writings of his son, H.B: As the 7th son of a 7th son, Samuel was supposed to have peculiar powers according to the superstitions of his community. Supposedly, he could "blow the fire out of burns" or stop blood and could be called Doctor." Before he was married, Samuel was a traveling singing teacher and this is how he met his wife, Juriah. After marriage and through his entire life he worked as a shoe and bootmaker. He and Juriah bought an 80-acre farm two miles west of Portage in 1860, hoping that the older sons could help farm it. But, according to H B Sayler, "The land was under water half the year and the children sick with chills and fever the other half." In 1861 Charley enlisted in the Civil War. John at first was rejected for the Civil War because he didn't weigh 100 pounds, but his father helped him enlist. He served 2 1/2 years and was kiled on Sherman's March to the Sea. That left H.B. Sayler to be the man of the house. In the 1890 census, Samuel is living with his son William in Portage, OH. He passed away in 1903.
