Carl Martin Schewe was born on January 5, 1865 in Klein Konitz, West Prussia. He is the third of five known children of (Johann) Friedrich Schewe and Dorothea Haß and was baptised in the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Konitz on January 8, 1865.
Carl worked as a train conductor for the German Reichsbahn. On November 15, 1891 he married Maria Lepack in Konitz. The couple had ten children:
Carl lost his wife Maria on December 22, 1944. A few months later, at the end of World War II, his son Willi prepared his family's escape from Konitz. Carl left his hometown together with his daughter Gustel, his daughter-in-law Frieda and her children Heinrich, Helga, Dieter, Günter. His son Willi was not permitted to leave Konitz. He joined the family again after the war and his time as prisoner of war. The family headed to Ilmenau, Thuringia in central Germany, where Carl's son Hans already lived for many years.
The fate of most of Carl's children is unknown as the family probably scattered all over Germany after the war and contact was lost.
Carl lived with his son Willi and his family in Ilmenau. Daughter Auguste also lived and married in Ilmenau. Life became normal again and he could see his grandchildren growing up.
Carl died on May 23, 1958, aged 93.
