Biography

Charles was born on 26 September 1827 in Württemberg, Germany. [1]

At the age of 27, Charles (Karl) Schrunk immigrated to the United states with his family. They arrived at the port of New York on 3 October, 1854 on board the ship "Patrick Henry". [2] The family is listed on the passenger manifest as Joseph Schrank, 55; Frederica, 50; Carl, 27; MIchael, 20; Carolina, 24; Frederica, 23; Theresa, 16; Paulina, 15; Serelia, infant; and Rosina, infant.

Charles married Mary R. Moser in Clayton County, Iowa on 16 February, 1857. [3] In the 1860 census for Mallory Township, Clayton County, Iowa, appear Charles Schrunk, age 32, born Wirtemberg (sic); Rosena Schrunk, age 30, born Wirtemberg; Gustavus Schrunk, age 2, born Iowa; and Joseph Schrunk, age 0, born Iowa. Also in this household are Charles' father, and 5 of his siblings. [4]

The 1870 census lists Charles and Mary, with 6 children and Charles' father still in Mallory Township. [5] In 1880 Charles and Mary are listed with 11 children, still in Mallory. [6]

The 1885 Iowa state census for Mallory, Clayton, Iowa lists the following 13 people in the household of Charles Schrunk: [7]

By the 1895 census only John, Emma, Frank, Lizzie, and "France" still lived with their parents, Charley and Rosa, [8]

In the 1900 census for the same place, Charles and Rosa are living with 3 of their children: John, 28; Frank, 24 and Francis, 19. [9]

Charles (Karl) Schrunk died on 14 February 1907 in Osterdock, Clayton, Iowa[1] and was buried on the 16th of February at St Mary's Cemetery, Guttenberg, Clayton, Iowa. [10]
