Henry was the son of Richard le Scrope[1] and Margaret Neville.[2][3][4] He was born at Bolton, Yorkshire, and was said to be age 3 in 1421. Douglas Richardson gives a birth date of 4 June 1418.[5][6] He was found to be three years and more at his father's Inquisition Post Mortem in 1421.[7] Henry's 1440 proof of age says he was age 21, and baptised at St Oswald's Chapel, Bolton, Yorkshire on 5 July 1439.[8]
From his father Henry inherited lands in Yorkshire, Buckinghamshire, Leicestershire and elsewhere.[5][6][7] During his minority they were entrusted to his uncle, Richard Neville.[9][10] He was granted full possession of them on 2 February 1439/40.[4]
Henry married Elizabeth le Scrope, daughter of John le Scrope (4th Lord Scrope of Masham, Yorkshire) and Elizabeth Chaworth,[2][3] in or just before 1435.[4][5][6] They had the following children:
