Biography

Theodore was born at Windsor, Maine in 1835, the son of William Seekins, Jr. (1811-1855) and Hannah Scates (1814-1911).

He married twice:

• Eliza D Leavitt married about 1854 (based solely upon the birth of their first known child in 1855). They were the parents of four known children:

1. Lucy D Seekins b. Apr 1855, d. 1928
2. Lilla 'Lily' Dale Seekins b. about 1858 at Windsor, Maine, d. 1932 in Somerset County, Maine
3. Fredrick Theodore Seekins b. 15 Oct 1859 at Pittsfield, Maine, d. 28 Apr 1911 at Mattawamkaeg, Maine
4. George H Seekins b. July 1861 at Augusta, Maine, d. 1932

• Amanda M Farrar married at Ripley, Maine on 11 February 1865 after filing a marriage notice on 4 February 1865. The Ripley Town records show two consecutive entries:

'" The intentions of marriage between Mr. Theodore B Seekins and Miss Amanada M Farrar, both of Ripley were duly entered in the Town Clerks office on the records of said town on the fourth day of February 1865 and certificate issued the tenth of said month.'" By me, a true attest, Harrison Jones, Town Clerk.

That entry is followed by another '" To Whom it may concern: This is to certify that Theodore B Seekins and Amanda M Farrar both of Ripley, in the county of Somerset, and State of Maine, were joined together in marriage at Ripley on the 11th day of February A.D. 1865. By me, Harrison Jones, Justice of the Peace and resident of Ripley. A true copy attest, Harrison Jones, Town Clerk of Ripley'".

They were the parents of nine known children:

The 1860 US census for Augusta, Maine lists the residents of a home as head of household Theodore B Seekins (25), a farmer, owns real estate valued at $1000 and has a personal estate valued at $200, Eliza D Seekins (25), Lucy D Seekins (5), attends school, Lilly D Seekins (3), and Fredrick F [sic] Seekins (1). All were born in Maine.

The 1870 US census for Pittsfield, Somerset County, Maine lists the residents of a home as head of household Theodore B Seekins (35), owns real estate valued at $1400 and has a personal estate of $5000, employed as a dealer in dry goods and groceries, Amanda M Seekins (22), keeping house, Lucy D Seekins (15), attends school, Lilla D Seekins (13), attends school, Theodore F Seekins (11), attends school, George H Seekins (9), attends school, Hannah M Seekins (4), and Reuel [sic] Seekins (31), carriage maker. All were born in Maine. NOTE: Ruel is the brother of Theodore B. Also, Lucy, Lilla, Theodore (Fredrick) and George are all Theodore's children with his first wife Eliza. Her residence in 1870 has not been established but she does not seem to be residing with any immediate family members.

The 1880 US census for St. Albans, Somerset County, Maine conducted 22 June 1880 lists residents of a home as head of household Theodore B Seekins (44), a merchant of corn, his wife Manda [sic] M Seekins (32), keeping house, son George H Seekins (18), at home, attends school, daughter Miriam H Seekins (14), at home, attends school. son William T Seekins (9), attends school, daughter Minnie A Seekins (11), attends school, and Warren R Seekins (10 months), born in August. All were born in Maine.

The 1900 US census for Pittsfield, Somerset County, Maine lists the occupants of a home they own as head of household Theodore B Seekins (64), born in Maine in June 1835, a traveling salesman, his wife of twenty years Amanda M Seekins (52), born in Maine in Jan 1848, mother of six living children, daughter Theda B Seekins (18), born in Maine in Sep 1881, attends school, son Selden D Seekins (16), born in Maine in Oct 1883, attends school, son Eugene B Seekins (13), born in Maine in June 1886, attends school, daughter Grace E Seekins (11), born in Maine in Jul 1888, attends school, and daughter Julie A Seekins (10), born in Maine in Jan 1890, attends school. Within the same house but in a separate household that is rented is son William T Seekins (29), born in Maine in Mar 1871, a lawyer, his wife of ten years Gertrude M Seekins (29), born in Maine in June 1871, mother of one child, and son Leon E Seekins (9), born in Maine in Oct 1890, attends school.

He died in 1907 at Pittsfield, Maine at age 71 years, 7 months, and 11 days. His death record states that he was born in Windsor, Maine, the son of William Seekins and Hannah Scates, married and his occupation was that he was a merchant. He is buried at the Pittsfield Village Cemetery.
