Biography

Lucy Shapton was born in Buckland Brewer, Devon and baptised there on 7 Feb 1833, the daughter of Samuel and Mary Shapton ^[1]

In 1841, Lucy is living with her widowed mother Mary and her sibling in Holley, Buckland Brewer, Devon ^[2]

By 1851, Lucy had left home, and was working as a servant living in Stoke Cottage, Stoke St Mary, Taunton, Somerset ^[3]

It is believed at this time that William was estranged from his wife, who was in Canada with some of their children, and he had two children with his housekeeper Lucy. Although no marriage has been found, Lucy adopted the surname of Trutch, possibly after William died in 1859.

The 1871 census shows Lucy as a 36 year old widow, living at 13 Regency Square, Brighton, Sussex and working as a ladies maid in the household of John Hegan a provisions merchant ^[4]

By 1881, Lucy is living in Chiswick, at no 2 Holly Villa, where she is shown as a 59 year old widow, and an annuitant ^[5]

In 1901, Lucy is a 65 year old widow, living in Battersea, Surrey, at 18 Park Road, as an inmate in the Royal Home for Ladies. ^[6]

Lucy is in a similar home in 1911, at 29 Spencer Road, Wandsworth, and shown as a 76 year old widow. ^[7]

Her death was registered in the Marylebone district of London in 1920, as Lucy Trutch, age 86. ^[8]
