No birth record for this Gawyn is yet found. But there is record of an elder Gawyn Shapton in Luppitt; he signed the Loyalty Oath of 1723.

Gawyn's marriage to Sarah Godfrey is of public record^[1]. They have four children of public record as well.

The surname Shapton seems to have a unique Devon affinity. It is not seen in other counties around Devon. The earliest appearance in the online indices for the Honiton area goes back to the christening of John Shapton in 1564. Shapton in Devon goes back at least to the 14th century.

A Gawin Shapton was baptized at Combe Raleigh on 6 March 1714, the son of John and Elizabeth Shapton.^[2].

A John Shapton was baptized in Thornbury on 27 April 1676, son of John Shapton and Jane^[3].

A John Shapton was baptized in North Molton on 16 March 1644, son of Thomas Shapton and Katherine^[4].
