Biography

Ellen was a Friend (Quaker)

Ellen was born in 1675. She was Baptized on the 26th of March 1675 at Capella [Chapel] in Waddington Parish, West Riding, Yorkshire, England. ^{[1][See Foot Note 1][2][See Foot Note 2]} She is the daughter of John Shires and Jennet [unknown birth surname].

Her mother was documented in the Women's Quarterly meeting records in 1679 as part of the Women Friends within Bolland's particular meeting.^[3] The area of the meeting was bordering the Bowland Forest where the small villages of Bolton by Bowland, Grindleton, Bradford and Waddington lies within the Parish of Mitton.

Her father, late of Grindleton, in Yorksh'r, in Great Britain, was among England's members of the Society of Friends who were enticed to purchase land in Pennsylvania, and owned land in Bucks County, Pennsylvania in 1682.^[4] He is documented returning to England by 1698, and back to Pennsylvania in 1715.^[5]

Richard Park of Sunbrook in ye pish of Aldingham & county of Lanc't cordwain & Ellen Shires of ye Monastray of Sawley in West riding of York spinster took each other in marriage in a publick assembly mett together for that end & purpose in ye house of Elizabeth Holgate of Sawley afores'd upon ye 22nd day of ye eleventh month 1698.^[6] Witnesses included John Shires, George Shires, Sen., Will'm Shires, George Shires, Jenet Shires, Sarah Shires, and Ellen Shires. Parke witnesses were Thomas Parke, James Parke, and Mary Parke. Richard was a shoemaker which was referred to as a cordwainer during that time period.

Ellen departed this life on the 27th day of September 1704. ^[7]

The widower, Richard Parke, emigrated to the Province of Pennsylvania in 1711 with his two children,^[8] and remarried in May of 1713 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Children of Richard Parke born to Ellen Shires were:

1. On the 23rd of November 1699, Thomas Parke was born to Richard Parke and Ellin in Wyresdale, Lancashire, England. ^[9]
2. On the 18th day of February 1702, Jennett Parke was born to Richard Parke and "Ellon" in Hawkshead, Lancashire, England. ^[10]

1. The preface of the Waddington Parish Register stated that "A chapel also existed at Grindleton from an early date; but it had no parochial status during the period covered by these registers which show that the inhabitants of that township were baptized, married and buried, at Waddington. There is however a Register of Baptisms at Grindleton commencing in 1760 and of Burials in 1813."^[1]
2. Although the transcriber of the records on FreeReg.org.uk, Linda Wilmot, recorded Cappella was a Methodist church, the Methodism movement did no start until 1738 in England. Capel is an old English form of the word chapel, from the Low Latin, capella, and is still found in place names in England.^[11]
