Biography

Ruel Shrewsbury, son of Samuel and Elizabeth Shrewsbury, died before 11 February 1802, when a record pertaining to his estate is found in court records for Bedford County, Virginia:^[1]

"Dabney Shrewsbury of Botetourt County. John Shrewsbury of Bath County. Samuel Shrewsbury of Kanawha County. John Buford and Rhoda, his wife late Rhoda Shrewsbury. Benjamin Turner and Elizabeth, his wife late Elizabeth Shrewsbury; Nathan Shrewsbury, William and Joel Shrewsbury all of Bedford County. All heirs and legatees of the estate of Ruel Shrewsbury, deceased. ..."

His estate is referenced in the 1819 will of Elizabeth Shrewsbury of Bedford County (widow of Samuel):^[2]

"...all the Right, Title, Interest and Claim which I have in Law or Equity in and to the Estate of my Son Ruel Shrewsbury Dec’d". The will names other children:

• son Dabney Shrewsbury Dec;’d
• sons ["son" in transcription] John, Samuel, Nathaniel, Nathan, William & Joel Shrewsbury
• daughters Rhoda Buford and Elizabeth Turner
• Grandson John Shrewsbury and my Grand daughter Rhoda Shrewsbury, son & daughter of my son William Shrewsbury

John Shrewsbury "gave bond and administration was granted him" on 25 October 1830.

Research Notes

Estimated Birth Year: "about 1760" based on dates for siblings and conventional naming patterns (first-born son after father).

Two Ruels: One of the Ruel Shrewsburys married Sarah Sinkler/Sinclair. More likely the other Ruel, son of Nathaniel, who is found in Kentucky in 1820^[3] & 1830,^[4] although Dabney Shrewsbury of Botetourt, the brother of this Ruel ([Shrewsbury-437]) married Elizabeth Sinclair/Sinkler, Sarah's sister (daughters of Isaac). Elizabeth married in October 1786 and Sarah in December 1788.^[5] We know the Dabney that Elizabeth married was the son of Samuel & Elizabeth Shrewsbury because he was named in the 1802 court record about Ruel's estate.^[1]

The record of Sarah's 1788 marriage to Ruel shows surety as Nathaniel and minister as Nathaniel.^[5][6] Since the elder Rev. Nathaniel (with a son named Ruel) moved to Kentucky in 1798 and the Ruel who was son of Samuel had a brother named Nathaniel, the information does not rule out either Ruel. it is most likely the Kentucky Ruel who married Sarah since it does not appear that this Ruel, who died before February 1802,^[1] had any children - his mother's 1819 will did not mention any heirs for Ruel.^[2]
