Anthony Sigler, age 19, male, Black, laborer, born in New Jersey, is listed as part of a family headed by Thomas Sigler, age 70, male, Black, laborer, born in New Jersey, in the 1850 U.S. Federal Census for Bloomfield, Essex, New Jersey. Also listed are Ann Sigler, age 38, female, Black; Phebe E. Sigler, age 4 mos.[1]

Married Charlotte Ann Schuyler in Paterson, New Jersey on 6 December 1854.[2] Charolotte appears to have died before 1860, as Anthony is again residing in his parents' home in 1860.

Anthony Sigler, age 28, male, Black, laborer, born in New Jersey, is listed as part of a family headed by Nancy Sigler, age 60, female, Black, born in New Jersey in the 1860 U.S. Federal Census for Bloomfield, Essex, New Jersey. Also listed are Sarah, age 21, female, Black; James, age 17, male, Black, laborer; and Phebe, age 10, female, Black.[3]

As Anthony Cigler [sic], age 29, estimated birth year 1836, born in Bloomfield, New Jersey, he enlisted 28 Feb 1865 at Newark in the 43rd U.S. Colored Infantry.[4]

Anthony Sigler, age 40, male, Black, labourer, born in New Jersey, is listed in the 1870 U.S. Federal Census for Bloomfield, Essex, New Jersey, with Mary E., age 27, female, Black, "keeping house"; James H., 4, male, Black; Charles A., age 2, male, Black; and Thomas F., age 1, male, Black.[5]

Anthony Sigler, age 48, male, Black, laborer, born in New Jersey (parents also born in New Jersey), is listed in the 1880 U.S. Federal Census for Bloomfield, Essex, New Jersey, with wife Mary E., age 39, Black; son James H., age 14, Black, at home; son Charles A., age 12, Black, at school; son Thomas F., age 9, Black; son William N., age 7, Black; son Joseph H., age 6, Black; and son Anthony, age 4, Black.[6]

Mary E. Cigler [sic], widow of Anthony Cigler who served in the 43rd U.S. Colored Inf., was awarded a pension, filed Mar 26 1894.[7]

As Anthony Sigler, Company A, 43rd Regiment, U.S.C.T., date of death 10 March 1894, he was provided a headstone at Bloomfield Cemetery for "deceased Union Civil War Veterans."[8]
