Biography

Jefferson Reese Sigler was the son of Philip Sigler and Martha Reese. He had ten siblings all born between 1810 and 1830.

He first married Mary Stevens, daughter of Israel Stevens of Taylor county, who died in 1847 leaving two sons.

He was married secondly to Jane Moats on 6 December 1850 in Richie, West Virginia.^[1] They had the following known children:

1. Mary Ellen "Ella" Sigler, (1851-1870) wife of H. P. McGregor, of Cairo;
2. George P. Sigler, (1854-1931) was a druggist at Pennsboro;
3. Martha Ann "Mattie" Sigler,(1856-1902) married Dr. J. R. Lowry, of Parkersburg;
4. Laura Sigler(1861-1863)
5. Myra Frances Sigler, (1863-1928) married Charles E. Batson, of Cairo;
6. Cora Virginia Sigler,(1866-1946) married Thurston Coffman, of Parkersburg;
7. Ollie Sigler, married Frank Gaylord, of Clarksburg;
8. Addie Sigler, married Rev. Mr. Beard, of the Presbyterian church;
9. Walter Bertly Sigler (1871-1886) was killed by a train in his boyhood.

"J. R. Sigler, who was long identified with the business affairs of 'this' town, came to this county from Evansville, Preston county in 1849; but later went to Gilmer county where he was engaged in the tannery business, at Glenville, at the breaking out of the Civil war; but in 1862, he returned to Harrisville where he remained until the time of the building of the "Calico railroad" when he came to Cairo. Here he was engaged in the mercantile business for many years, and here he passed from earth; but in the Harrisville cemetery he slumbers. ^[2]

J.R Sigler died at the age of 74 and was interred in the IOOF Cemetery, Harrisville, Ritchie Co., West Virginia.^[3]
