Obituary

Josephine M. (Jody) Pivonka, formerly of Salina, Kan., passed away Thursday, December 22, 2011, at the Kansas City Hospice House. She made her home in Lenexa, Kan., for the past 10 years. Jody was born on Oct. 12, 1922, to Homer E. and Frances A. (Wood) Singley in Plains, Kan. She graduated from Kismet High School and College from Marymount in Salina, with a degree in dietetics. She did her internship at the Mayo Clinic during World War II. Following her internship, she taught school in Kismet and worked for several hospitals as a dietitian. While teaching at Kismet, she met her husband, Tom Pivonka, a Kansas State Highway Patrol Trooper. They later lived in Liberal, Paola, Colby and Salina where they raised their four children. Jody was the dietitian for the Kansas Vocational Rehabilitation Center in Salina from its inception to her retirement in 1987. Following her retirement, Jody loved to play cards with her friends and sit in her favorite chair birdwatching. She was an avid sports fan and never missed a chance to watch the Jayhawks, Royals or Chiefs on television. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Tom and her brother, William Singley. She is survived by her sister, Bette (Tommy) Lee. She will be greatly missed by her four children, Becky Pivonka, Dr. Tim (Meg) Pivonka, Cece (Dave) Culver and Fran Pivonka. She is also survived by five grandchildren, Ryan (Andrea) Pivonka of Columbus, Ind., Kate Pivonka of Louisville, Ky., Erin Pivonka, of Lexington, Ky., Rick (Abby) Culver of Kansas City, Kan., and Leslie (Chris) Davis of Olathe, Kan. She also has eight great grandchildren. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 27, at the Good Shepherd Catholic Church, 12800 W. 75th, Shawnee, Kan., followed by the funeral service. Burial will be at Resurrection Cemetery, Lenexa, Kan.
