Biography

Died at Leeholme, Woodville, on the 31st October, 1887, Samuel Skinner, aged 42 years, leaving an affectionate wife and seven children to mourn their loss. The Maitland Mercury and Hunter River General Advertiser (NSW : 1843 - 1893) Sat 12 Nov 1887 Page 5

WOODVILLE. The angel of death has cast its dark shadow over another home, removing from amongst us a loving husband, a tender father, a faithful friend. Quite a gloom was cast over this little community on Monday morning last by the news that Mr. Samuel Skinner was dead. The deceased was forty-two tears of age, and a native of this colony. He was of a quiet, unobtrusive disposition, thoroughly in earnest in whatever he undertook ; he possessed one of those steady, bravo, honest natures which will meet Fate in every turn and fairly coax the jade into good humour. He had been for several years a churchwarden of All Saints Church ; he was also a zealous member of the Church Defence Association. The deceased has been going in and out amongst us in apparently good health till within the last few weeks, and even then no serious fears were entertained of his death till about a week before he died, when he began to fail rapidly, and on Monday morning, in spite of all that medical aid could do, combined with the most tender care, he breathed his last. He leaves a wife and family to mourn their irreparable loss. The funeral, which was a large one, was on Tuesday ; his remains were interred in the pretty little Hinton graveyard. The treasures that the churchyard holds are not lost. The dead in Christ are only gone before ; and as the swift years glide by, nearer comes the day when the long-severed shall meet again. The Christ of the Gospel is Christus consolator. Much sympathy is felt for the bereaved family. Nov. 9th, 1887.
