An English author/poet is an author/poet who was born in England or (like Rudyard Kipling) was born abroad of English parents and was counted a British Citizen.
The Mission of the topic is to assist in the management of the profiles which represent authors who were born in England or who are English-born-abroad and their immediate families and ancestors. Some authors are badged as Notables. Several authors wrote in different genres, and this will be reflected in the categorisation structure, as the "English Authors" topic also includes English Poets, English Playwrights, and English Diarists.
  • To identify and gather (by categorisation) WikiTree profiles of English authors.
  • To create a basic profile for an author if he/she does not already have one - then research and develop that profile
  • To search for them in the England & Wales censuses
  • To add their bibliography (in a list) to their profiles
  • To create a linked freespace page to contain their bibliography if they were a prolific writer
  • To determine which profiles are to be managed by the England Project
  • To place a sticker on the profiles to be managed by other individuals/projects
  • To continue their lineage by at least two generations to grandparents and grandchildren
By placing the relevant category on any profiles of authors which you come across. Maybe you would like to take on one or more of our goals above? Contact Ros Haywood if you have any queries.
  • England Project - England, Occupations - English Authors
  • Occupations - Occupations by Name - Writers - Authors - English Authors
Both of these are ways in which the English Authors topic is categorised
An example categorisation for this topic is:
Alexander Pope: [[Category:English Authors]]
This would place him in the general topic
Adding [[Category:English Poets]] as well would add him to a section for poets

As I mentioned to the Worcester/West Midlands team, I added notable poet Samuel Butler (1613–1680) from Upton upon Severn. Today at work a friend wrote this and I wondered who said it:

"a man convinced against his will is of the same opinion still"

The quote "A man convinced against his will is of the same opinion still" is commonly attributed to Dale Carnegie, author of the famous self-help book "How to Win Friends and Influence People".

However, there is no exact phrasing of this quote in the book itself, and some debate exists about whether Carnegie actually originated it.

"The saying comes from the satirical poem Hudibras by Samuel Butler (1612-80). The full line is, "He that complies against his Will, Is of his own Opinion still; Which he may adhere to, yet disown, For Reasons to himself best known""
