David was born about 1844. He was 19 when he enlisted in the Union Army during the American Civil War. [1] He was wounded in the Battle of Honey Hill, but recovered and rejoined his unit. [2]

He died 18 May 1933 at his home in Xenia, Greene County, Ohio, after being burnt from a lantern that caught fire when he lit it.[3]
