Research Notes

Unsourced profile, no evidence found for Elizabeth at the moment. Checked for possible burials on Ancestry, Find my Past, Familysearch and Freereg. Could find no evidence of a Yorkshire connection, all records for this family before 1600 appear to be in Fitzhead, Somerset, or Bristol. Parish register is on FreeReg from 1577, and transcripts with some earlier entries on Genuki.[2]

The idea of a Yorkshire connection appears to have arisen from a single letter in 1849 from an unidentified "English Heraldist". The letter is quoted second hand in another letter of 1873 in the book The Rockwell family in America.[3] It states amongst other things that Ralph Rocheville was granted land in Yorkshire "upon which estate the Rockwells have continued up to the present day, James Rockwell, Esq., of Rockwell Hall, Boroughbridge, County of York, being the representative of the family in Great Britain." However, I can find no trace of the existence of a Rockwell Hall or James Rockwell in Boroughbridge in the 1800s or any other time. There is nothing in the 1841 or 1851 census.

The assertions in the letter were examined in a later book "The Rockwell family in one line of descent"[4] which says "Of these statements, as well as of the traditional rescue of Earl Percy, the celebrated Hotspur, by Sir John Rockwell, I have found as yet no confirmation whatever. That does not disprove them; but it has engendered skepticism ... Sir Ralph de Rocheville of Boroughbridge, has so far failed to materialize in the records."
