Kent (historic flag)
John Stanley was born in Kent, England.
John Stanley, son of Robert Stanley, was baptized 2 Oct 1598, at Tenderden, Kent, England. His mother may have been Ruth Standley, who married Humphrey Uredge, after the death of Robert.[1]
He married Elizabeth Uredge, 14 Oct 1623 at Benenden, Kent. Elizabeth was buried at Tenterden 12 Dec 1632.[1]
The fleet of CLEMENT AND JOB, REFORMATION, TRUE LOVE, ELIZABETH BONAVENTURE, SEA FLOWER, PLANTER, and NEPTUNE. On February 28 they were released under bond of £100 to conform to certain 'articles.' It is probable that most of them came into Boston during the week of May 12-17, 1634 'with store of passengers and cattle.' Winthrop said they had enjoyed a 'short passage.' Of the 'store' of passengers less than a score is known." Among them JOHN STANLEY, Mrs. Stanley [sic], John Stanley, (child) Stanley, and Ruth Stanley[2]

Stanley-5849 and Stanley-154 appear to represent the same person because: Stanley-5849 and Stanley-154 are too similar to not be the same individual. Stanley 5849 has no sources, but contains a very similar narrative of his passing on his voyage to America in 1634.

Note, John II was the twin brother of Christopher and John's son, George was born in England based on records I found on familysearch.org. These twin brothers are of particular interest to me as my mother is descended from Christopher and my father is descended from John II. Christine Brunet

Hi Christine,

This profile appears to be a duplicate of Stanley-154. If you are the profile manager, please review the twice an decide if this a duplicate or not. The history given in the biography is way too similar to that in Stanley-154 for this not to be a duplicate with an erroneous date of birth. Regards, Bill Stanley

How could John be a founder of Hartford if he died at sea on the way over?
posted by Bryan McCullagh
He is not. But his children young John Stanley and his sister Ruth were made wards of their two uncles, also on board, by the court of Boston (Timothy and Thomas). Soon after, in the congregation of Puritan Reverend Thomas Hooker, they journeyed down to the Hartford valley and are listed on the town monument young John, Timothy, and Thomas Stanley.
