During the Revolutionary War, in the years 1776-1781, George Stillman is seen consistently as a Captain of the 3rd Company of Militia in the Town of Westerly, Rhode Island. At one time this 3rd Company was seen under the 1st Battalion of Militia for Kings County, Rhode Island. Later (probably after the war), George would hold the rank of Colonel and was Commandant of the First Regiment of Militia in the County of Washington (renamed from Kings County in 1781), Rhode Island. During the Revolutionary War Capt. Stillman marched his soldiers from Westerly to Boston Neck in December 1776.
Research
George appears as head of household in the 1774 Census of Rhode Island[2]. His household distribution and inferred attributions are
two white males over 16: George and unknown
one white male under 16: son George
two white females over 16: Esther and daughter Susannah
three white females under 16: daughters Esther, Sarah, and Mary
If this data is correct, it seems that son Sylvester had passed away by the time the census was taken.
