Edward is the fifth son, and the fifth child of James Stoner and Mary Ann (née Harding) Stoner. Edward is the younger brother of four brothers Jesse Stoner, Peter William Stoner, George Allen Stoner and Thomas Stoner. Edward is the older brother of four sisters Annie Elizabeth (née Stoner) Elsley, Mercy Emma (née Stoner) Bozier, Margaret Stoner and Alice Harriet Stoner, and one brother Frederick Robert Stoner.
