Adam Hugo Strauss (sometimes recorded as Krauss or Strouse) was born November 23, 1842 in Danzig, West Prussia, Germany (present-day Gdansk, Poland). He was the son of Carl Ludwig Strauss and Elisabeth Catharina Borski Strauss.
Adam was christened December 18, 1842, at St. Trinity Church in Danzig.[1]
Adam immigrated from Germany to the United States in 1856, at the age of 14.[2] His parents did not travel with him; he made the ocean voyage with his older sister Marie Louise Strauss (age 20) and his younger brother Carl August Strauss (age 9, though he was erroneously recorded as age 7).[3] The siblings traveled aboard the steamer ship Louise Marie, departing from Bremen and arriving in Philadelphia on May 7, 1856. They traveled in steerage, the lowest possible category of long-distance steamer travel.[4]
Adam then resided in Philadelphia, where he would live for the rest of his life. He married Elisabeth Schmidt on December 15, 1870 in Philadelphia.[5] However, Elisabeth died sometime between 1871 - 1879.
Adam then married Mary Ziegler around 1879. Adam was 36, and Mary was about 16. The couple had their first child, Bertha E. Strauss, in 1880.[6] They would go on to have 10 children.
Adam worked as a machinist.[7]
His last address before death was 1020 Leithgow St.[8]
Adam died in Philadelphia on December 28, 1897, at the age of 55. He was buried at Monument Cemetery.[9]
