Biography

Vol. III Sweat, John F. 1818-1860 Pierce John F. Sweat was born in bulloch County, 1818, a son of William and Sarah (Williams) Sweat, and grandson of Nathan Sweat, R.S. (Vol. I). He was married in 1838 to Sarah Newbern, born 1819, daughter of Thomas Newbern (Vol. I). She and her sister Charity married nephew and uncle. Born to John f. and Sarah (Sallie) were nine children, viz:

Roland b.1839 m. Jane Riggins, dau of W.J. Mary b. 1841 m. 1st Henry Tatum; 2nd Holiday Sauls. Elizabeth b. 1843 m. W.R. (Robert) Youmans. William S. b. 1845 m. MaryAnn Foster, dau of Frank W. of Screven Co. Reubin b. 1848 m. Isabelle Spells Charity b. 1850, never married Thomas Newbern b. 1852, m. 1st Lucinda Johnson, dau of Duncan; 2nd Alice Paul John F. Jr. b. 1854, m. Ellen Johnson, dau of Duncan Mariah b. 1858, m. Albert Tuten Mr. Sweat came with his parents to Ware County in his boyhood and grew up and married there. He lived in the portion cut into Pierce County, 1858. He owned lots of land 9 and 38 in the 5th district of Pierce County, and lived there at his death. He died in the winter of 1860-1861, and was buried in the old Sweat Cemetery nearby on Hurricane Creek. His wife survived and married S.H. Gooding about 1870. She died about 1890 and was buried by her first husband. Pierce County deed records show the widow, Mrs. Gooding and the children sold the above home lands to Lemuel Johnson Nov 9, 1871. Matthew Sweat, as guardian for the minor heirs, Thomas N., John F., and Maria, signed the deed. He was appointed in November 1861, as such guardian. He was also the administrator of the estate. The deceased owned town lots in Blackshear, and his home-place lands and also lands in Ware County.

John F. Sweat served as Justice of Ware Inferior Court, 1847 to 1853, inclusive.
