Major William Bentinck Swinton was born in 1835, the son of George Swinton and Anne Elizabeth Swinton.[1]
He was educated at the Edinburgh Academy (1863-66).[2]
He joined the Madras Light Cavalry as a cornet in 1856 and was promoted to lieutenant in the same year.
He married Elizabeth Cadell, daughter of Robert Cadell and Anne Fletcher Mylne, on 28 October 1858 in Madras, India.[3] They had six children:
He was promoted to captain in 1862 and major in 1873.
He died on 4 June 1876 at Secunderabad, killed by a fall from his horse on parade.
