Alberta Blanche Thom Mullen, 101, formerly of Lowell and Grand Rapids, Michigan, died April 30th in Elgin IL. She was born in Alberta, Canada, April 1, 1909, raised in Marlette, MI. and was a graduate of Marlette High School and Eastern Michigan University (Michigan State Normal College). Blanche taught art and music in the Grandville, and Ypsilanti, MI, schools. In l954, she joined the teaching staff of Lowell High School. She taught art and was a pioneer of the Lowell Arts Council and Western Michigan Artists Association. She and her late husband, Donald Mullen were active in local Showboat activities, the Lowell Players and were area puppeteers. Upon retirement in l972, Blanche traveled with the Michigan YMCA World Ambassador program and developed international art programs for area art teachers. In l972, she was elected to the Lowell School Board where she served for two terms. She was V.P. of the Board from 1974-1976. After l981 she resided in Grand Rapids. She was a member of Fountain Street Church, St. Cecilia Society, and the Grand Rapids Women's City Club. A significant part of her life was her Greek book study group at Fountain Street Church and the friendships and intellectual growth that came from it. She is survived by three daughters, Dr. Brooke (Frank) Transue of Elgin, IL, Dr. Ann Frisch of White Bear Lake, MN, and Noel (Chris) Feeney of Martinez, GA; grandchildren, Don Transue, Batavia, IL, Paul Transue, Portage, MI, Betsy (Joe) Blauvelt, Chicago, IL, Stirling (Brian) Cousins, White Bear Lake, MN, James Feeney, Atlanta, GA; a great grand daughter, Marina Cousins and great step-grandson, Cass Cousins, sister-in-law, Berneice Mullen Wallig, Wichita Falls, TX, and many nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 8, 2010, at St. Hugh of Lincoln Episcopal Church, 36W957 W. Highland Ave. Elgin, IL.
