Mary Tomes was the daughter of Edward Tomes Esq, and Mary Susannah Cotton.
She was born in Southam, Warwickshire, shortly before 28th April 1802, when she was privately baptised.
Baptism Record of Mary Tomes, daughter of Edward Tomes and his wife Mary |
Her mother, Mary Susannah, who may have suffered complications due to childbirth, died on 19th June and was buried on 21st June 1802.
There must have been considerable upheaval in the family due to Mary Susannah's ill health, fast decline and death, as well as caring for the infant Mary, her only child, who seems to have been weak (and for this reason was privately baptised, in case she also died).
Mary would have had a wet nurse[1] to breast feed her, probably before her mother's death, but certainly afterwards.
As soon as she was strong enough, she was re-baptised on 30th May, a year later in 1803. This is why her official records state that she was born about 1803.
On 22nd August 1805, her father, Edward, married again, in St Anne's, Limehouse, London, the daughter of John Shuttleworth of London, Caroline Shuttleworth (1777-1847).
Mary therefore grew up with a step-mother. Whether Mary was present at the wedding or stayed at home with her nurse, we also do not know. In any case, she would have had to get used to a new lady in the house. How this relationship worked is anyone's guess, but as she had never known her real mother, and her father married Caroline when Mary was 3 years and 4 months old, she probably got used to the new situation.
On 6th December 1824, she married Henry Thomas Chamberlayne of The Ryes, Hatfield Broad Oak, Essex and of Stoney Thorpe, Long Itchington.[2]
She and Henry had 8 children, Mabel Alicia (1825-1850), William Tankerville (1828-1905), Emma Caroline (1830-1908), Edward Tomes (1833-1887), Ellen Bridget (1836-1929), Henry Stanes Brocket (1840-1841), Stanes Brocket Henry (1843-1931) and Thermuthes Fauquier (1845-1907).

On the Sunday night of 7 April 1861, when the next census was held, the Chamberlaynes had had dinner prepared by their cook, Martha Miles. Whether it was a normal evening is unknown, but they did have a visitor; Mary Louisa Haddock, born in Colombo, Ceylon, who, ten years before had been registered as a governess in the household of George H and Anne Fisher, Bentley Hall, Staffordshire. Was she looking for a new post, or was she a friend of the younger adult Chamberlaynes, William, Emma and Ellen? She had hardly known her father, Brevet-Major Robert Haddock, who had been killed by a rampaging elephant on a sport hunt at Ruwanwela, Ceylon, on 26th June 1828, when his eldest child had been but three years old. Did the Chamberlaynes know this, and felt sorry for her, adopting her as their friend, or, since Emma Andrews, their governess in 1851, had left them, were they seeking a new tutor for Thermuthes Fauquier, 15? In any case, let us hope that the dinner was a good one.
