Biography

Elizabeth May was born in 1914, to Rolla Cassius Trowbridge and Zelpha Judith Andis.^[1]

May married Ralph Bland on the 9th of December, 1931, in Greene County, Indiana.^[2] They had a son who was born in 1932, and died that same year. They named him Leon.^[3]

In 1940,^[4] the couple are living in Beech Creek, Greene, Indiana. They are renting a home on Camp Branch Road. Ralph (33) is supporting the family by driving a school bus. He worked 48 hours the week before the census, and 39 weeks in 1939 earing $772. The census shows that Ralph completed the 8th grade and May completed the 1st year of high school. The couple have 2 sons:

• Keith (6) - born 1934 in Indiana
• Kenneth (3) - born 1937 in Indiana

Also in the home is Dewey Bland (36), brother to Ralph. Dewey is working as a farm laborer. Listed on the same page of the census is Harvey Bland (53) with his wife and children. Harvey is another brother.

When Ralph completed his WWII Draft Card in 1942,^[5] he was 34 year old. He listed his employer as self and his occupation as farmer. He described himself as being 5'8", 145 pounds, with a ruddy complexion, red hair and blue eyes.

In 1950,^[6] the couple are living on Newark Road, in Beech Creek, Indiana. Ralph (43) is self-employed and driving a truck for the county. He worked 40 hours the week before the census. May (35) is keeping house and raising the children. The couple now have a daughter named Linda (5) who was born in 1945.

Ralph died on the 15th of May, 1993, at the age of 86. The cause of death was cardiac arrithymia. At the time of his death Ralph and May were living on a farm in rural Solsberry, Indiana.^[7] Ralph was buried in the Newark Cemetery, in Newark, Greene County, Indiana.

Elizabeth May died on the 28th of July, 2008, at the age of 93. The cause of death was aspiration. Contributing to her death was a generalized decline due to dementia.^[8] May was buried next to her husband in the Newark Cemetery.^[9]
