Biography

Argelon was born about 1753. It appears he was the son of Lewis Toone [Tune] and his wife Francis. He was not an educated man, signed by his mark, but others appear to have spelled his name as the original, Toone.

Argelon enlisted at the beginning of the Revolutionary War in the Continental Army, in Capt. Samuel Hopkins company, which was raised in Mecklenburg County, Virginia on or about the 4th March 1776. He served in the 6th Virginia Continental Regiment two years. During this time, he was in the battles of Trenton, Princeton, Germantown, Mud Island Fort, & Brandywine.

He then enlisted under whom he called Capt. Wills, who was attached to the 3rd Continental Regiment of the Virginia line, and went to Guilford Courthouse and was in that battle. He was then transferred to a Rifle corps commanded by Capt. John Brown, who was attached to Gen. Francis Marion's Partisan corps to the South, and when in that service, he was serving in Lt. Col. Henry Lee’s Legion of the Continental Line and was in various skirmishes and inferior conflicts.

He was then ordered to march to Yorktown against Lord Cornwallis, under the command of Ensign Perkins, but did not arrive until after Cornwallis had surrendered to Gen. George Washington.

Argelon served throughout the entire war, wherein he was actively employed in some thirteen general engagements. His application for a disability pension included the fact that he'd had eleven bullet holes shot through one hunting shirt, but had not received a scratch, which he attributed only to divine providence. Indeed one might have to agree.

Argelon was married 13th October 1783 in Mecklenburg County, Virginia to Mary Freeman. He first made application for pension in 1818 and was placed on the pension roll 1st April 1819. He drew a pension of $8 per month, totaling $96 annually, commencing from 15 June 1818. A pension statement for Mecklenburg County makes account for a total of $1,509.29 paid to Argelon Toone over the remainder of his life, which at that rate, indicates he would have passed away about 1833, but a payment roster indicates a last payment in March of 1837.
