Thomas' Story Added by debbie ayres1 on 26 Oct 2008 This is an extract from a sheet titled "MARTIN McDONALD URQUHART'S GRANDPARENTS". It is not known who wrote this. It was sent to Wayne Schmidt by Rosie Schmidt of Barraba NSW. She said it was given to her by Dulcie, Martin Urquhart's wife. Hopefully somebody may let us know who the author is or was. Thomas was the youngest of seven children born to parents who came out from Inglewood in Scotland in the early 1800's. They worked on the property "Burindi Station", Barraba. They are buried on the station. Thomas grew up with the famous bushranger Ben Hall and had various encounters with Fred Ward, better known as "Thunderbolt". Thomas was "adopted" by an English family named Willis of Tamworth. He later moved to Barraba where his brothers were fencing, sawing timber, ring-barking etc. He then met Louisa and later married, moving to "Rangari" where he managed that property for 21 years for Erwin Winter. Thomas was a tall man well over 6ft., and had thick wavy hair. He was a very quiet-mannered, hard working man and had large hands and blue eyes. Thomas Willis Urquhart's brothers and sisters were, Hopton born 1842, James, Jack, George,Ada and Rachel. Hopton Urquhart was well known throughout the Gunnedah district as a skilled whip maker and a very clever man with his hands. He worked on a property named "Borah" in his young days and was a great horseman. Jack Urquhart* was an explorer, killed by the "blacks". He rode 70 miles with a spear through his side. This information supplied by Rosie Schmidt of Barraba *We now know that Jack (John) Urquhart was a drover and worked for the Durack family and was involved with droving cattle into the Northern Territory. He was not killed by aboriginals, but died of malaria and the effects of rum which had been consumed in the belief it may have been a "cure".
