Birth

James Urquhart was born about 1829 and was christened on the 5 Nov 1829 in Kilmorack, Inverness-shire, Scotland, United Kingdom.^[1] He was the son of John Urquhart and Helen Jamieson

Census Records

• On 1841 census, James was aged 12 and living with his parents, sister Christy and brother George at Knockfin Wester, Kilmorack, Inverness. ^[2]
• On 1861 census, he was married to Margaret Cameron and they had son, John aged 2 years. James was aged 32 and he was living in Snizort, Inverness as a gamekeeper (as was his father and brother, Duncan). ^[3]
• On 1871 census, he was the Innkeeper of the Uig Inn/Hotel and also a farmer. He was 53 years old and Margaret was 50.^[4]
• On 1881 census, he was still an innkeeper and living at 2 Bensoraig Hotel. ^[5]
• On 1891 census, they were still at Uig Hotel. Several of his children were also working at the hotel and after his death, his wife, Margaret, became the Head and carried on in charge of the Hotel with her sons and daughters help. ^[6]

Death

James died in 1894 aged 63 years from cirrhosis of liver and Dropsy for 15 months. The informant was his son John Urquhart^[7] James died on 3 April 1894 in Uig.^[8]

Research Notes

What is interesting is that John, his son, put his father's father as Donald Urquhart (in error) but there needs to be investigation as to any links there, as no parents are given on James' father's death certificate.
