In ABA, diocese of Mahagi, four of our Belgian sisters died as martyrs on November 27, 1964 Sister Marie Gerarda (Adrienne Verhoye 1907 - 1964Sister Marie Gerarda (Adrienne Verhoye 1907 - 1964

Born in Kanegem on January 9, 1907 Entrance to Ingelmunster on November 3, 1924 Profession in Ingelmunster on September 20, 1926 1st departure for Congo on March 31, 1930 Died in Aba / Congo on November 27, 1964

In the first years after her profession, Z. Gerarda devoted herself to all kinds of practical services in the community: kitchen, laundry, seam .... She carried that great desire to be among the first missionaries of the congregation. In 1930 her wish was fulfilled and she left with three fellow sisters to Africa, where they founded Fataki's mission. There she helped and guided the young girls in all kinds of household tasks.

Also in Drodro she served the Lord in simplicity and love. In 1951 she founded the fourth mission "Bunia". She was appointed as superior. For 21 years she has done her work with great patience and with the ever present smile. Only after 17 years of hard work did she return to Belgium for the first time. Always ready and full of courage, she went to "Aba" in 1963, where she gave her life for the Lord - and her dear loved ones. In all circumstances she gave testimony to the true face of the Church: that of the generous love that gives her life for the others.

She was the sister who was greatly appreciated and loved by the native girls, because she was a real support for them.
