Joan was born in 1924. She passed away in 1951.
Joan Vollmer was the most prominent female member of the early Beat Generation circle. While a student at Barnard College, she was the roommate of Edie Parker, later married to Jack Kerouac. Beats often gathered at their apartment in the 1940s. In 1946, she began a relationship with William S. Burroughs, and became his common-law wife. In 1951, Burroughs and Vollmer were playing "William Tell" and he accidentally killed Vollmer by shooting her in the head.
