Biography

[1]Sept 16, 1665; Administration was granted to his widow, Sarah. The town council determined that as she was with child, if it was a son and lived to 21 years, he should have L40, and if a daughter, same sum at marriage, and if it do not live, said sum to go to the widow. The inventory amounted to £89, 15s 10d., and consisted of pewter, wearing apparel, spinning wheel, working tools, 2 guns, pair of bandoliers, 2 cows, 2 yearlings, calf, 7 swine, 4 shoats, 6 pigs, lambs, 10 lbs butter, cow in hands of Samuel, ets. It is assumed that William, of Rochester, was his son and born late in the year 1665

[2] JOSEPH, of Portsmouth, b. abt. 1643; drowned at Portsmouth 25 Aug. 1665; m. SARAH --. On 16 Sept. 1665 the Town council of Portsmouth granted administration on his estate to his widow, Sarah, and made provision for her unborn child. As no provision was made for this child in the division of the estate of Thomas Waite in 1669, it may be assumed that it was stillborn or died young. (Mr. Austin in his account of this family and John Cassan Wait in his 'Descendants of Thomas Wait' credit Joseph Waite with a son, William wait of Rochester, Mass.; but an examination of the Rochester records shows that this man was named William Wiett (i.e. Wyatt).

[3]"Where as it pleased the allmighty god that joseph waite Secon[] Sonn to Thomas Wayt of portsmoth on Rhoad Island in ye Collony of Rhoad Island and providence plantations in New England in America wos drownded on teh 25th day August last past, and Deceassed intestate with out makinge a will, how and to whome his Estate should be devided and disposed of, Thereofore for the setlement of the Estate of the Said Deceassed joseph wayte Accordinge to whot by the law of this Collony we are Authorised, we the Counsell of ye townee of portsmoth doe here by afree and Detirmine and doe here by a poynte and Authorize Sarrah wayte widow to the afore said Deceassed Joseph wayte to be whole and Sole Excequetrix unto the whole Estate to pay all the Debts of the Deceassed afore said and to Recueu whot is from any man of person dew to him and to performe and duly to Excecute whot the Counsell herre in Shall ordder...
