Biography

John Walcot son of Humphrey Wolcott of Wolcot in Shropshire and his wife, Anna Docwra, was baptised on the 24th of June 1624.^[1] He was educated at Exeter College, Oxford 1640 and Middle Temple 1641.^[1][2]

When the Civil War broke out in 1642 his father tried to maintain neutrality, was compelled to aid the King's forces and subsequently fined £500 by the Parliamentarians. John, on the other hand, took arms for the King, was taken captive at the siege of Shrewsbury and was held in Powis Castle until ransomed. When his father died in 1650 John inherited an estate encumbered with debt which he spent the interregnum paying off.^[1]

About 1653 he married Elizabeth Lucy, daughter of Sir Thomas Lucy of Charlecote in Warwickshire and his wife, Alice Spencer.^[1] Lucy bore him 2 sons who both died in John's lifetime and died herself in 1655. She was buried on the 5th of February.^[1]

On 26 May 1657 he married Elizabeth Clarke, daughter of Sir George Clarke, grocer of London who bore him 6 sons and 7 daughters.^{[1] [3]}

After the restoration in 1660 John became active in local affairs but it wasn't until 1685 that he was returned to Parliament as member for Shropshire.^[1]

He died in 1702 and was buried at Lydbury. ^[1]
