Biography

Francis was born in 1822. He was the son of Barnard Walford. He passed away in 1896.

Although baptised Francis William Barnard Walford, he was known as William Barnard Walford. Born 11 April 1822, Baptised 'Francis William Barnard' by Rev. Knopwood on 10 May 1822, son of Barnard and Maria Walford, abode Hobart, 'married' ^[1]

By the early 1840s, William Barnard Walford was in Sydney, and there in 1842 married his first cousin Elizabeth Tovey Simons (1824–1912).^[2] Elizabeth, also born in Hobart, was the daughter of John Tovey Symonds (an ex-convict) and Mary Walford.

"Throughout the latter half of the nineteenth century, William Barnard Walford developed a number of business interests, investing in real estate, mining and other ventures, and later serving as a director of companies such as the Australian Gaslight Company. William and Elizabeth Walford lived at ‘Waratah’, in Rushcutters Bay and had eleven children, of whom only five survived to adulthood."^[3]

Death 27 January 1896 at his residence, "Waratah", 1 Bayswater Road, Darlinghurst, New South Wales, Australia (date 27 January 1896 is from his probate in the NSW will books in findmypast, however the date of of death on his grave is 28 January 1896).^[4]

The will (written 13 February 1895) of William Barnard Walford, late of Darlinghurst Esquire mentions his wife Elizabeth Walford, son Sydney Rundle Walford, daughter Edith Eleanor Broughton (wife of Francis Albert Broughton), son Leslie Nicholl Walford, daughter Jessie Amelia Read (wife of Thomas Read), and children of his late son William Bernard Walford namely Isabel, William, Barnard, Francis, Jessie and Linda.^[7]
