Jacob S. Watson was born about 1843[1] in Pennsylvania[2]. He was the child[2] of Nancy and Alexander Watson, and the husband[3] of Martha Burgess. He served with the famous 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry during the US Civil War.
In 1860, he is attending school in or near Mercersburg, Pennsylvania.[2]
His father, Alex Watson, was also a butcher.[2]
During the Civil War, he served as a Sergeant in Company K of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry of the Union Army, the second[4] regiment in the United States made up entirely of enlisted men of color. He was about 20 years old, married, and working as a butcher when he enlisted on 6 Ma 1863 from Mercersburg, Pennsylvania. Mustered out 20 August 1865 with his regiment.[1]
His brother Hezekiah also served with the 54th.
He passed away in 1881 and is buried at Zion Union Cemetery in Mercersburg, Pennsylvania.[3]
