Biography

Mary Ann Watts was born at Alvaston, near Derby, Derbyshire, England in 1824.[1][2] She was baptised at St Michael and All Angels Church, Alvaston on the 14th November 1824, the daughter of James & Martha Watts.[3] At the time of her baptism her father was a shopkeeper.

She married John Ditchfield[4] at the Wesleyan Methodist Association Chapel, Grosvenor Street, Chorlton-upon-Medlock on the 25th December 1848[5]. John was a 34 year old bachelor, and school master, of Winton, Barton upon Irwell. His father was Joseph Ditchfield, husbandman. Mary Ann was a 25 year old spinster, of New Brighton, Cheshire, the daughter of James Watts, shopkeeper. Witnesses were Joseph Fairbrother and Caroline Fairbrother.[6]

The marriage was reported in the local newspaper: "On the 25th inst., at the Wesleyan Methodist Association Chapel, Grosvenor-street, Chorlton-upon-Medlock, by the Rev. Henry Breeden, President of the Annual Assembly, Mr. John Ditchfield, Master of the Mechanics Institution Schools, Patricroft, to Miss Mary Ann Watts, of New Brighton, Liverpool."[7]

On the 1851 census, John & Mary Ann Ditchfield lived at New Street, Barton Upon Irwell, Lancashire, where John was a school master. They had one daughter, Alice Mary, aged 4.[1]

In 1861, John & Mary Ann lived at Green Lane, Barton Upon Irwell, where the census incorrectly recorded her age as "27", rather than 37. They had three daughters, Alice M, (11) Martha E, (9) and Mary A.(7)[8] Their son John James, born in 1855[9], had died "within three weeks of his birth"[10].

Their second son, John Edwin was born at Green Lane on the 17th September 1861.[10]

By 1871, John & Mary Ann were living at 94 Liverpool Road, Barton Upon Irwell, where Mary gave her birthplace as "Derbyshire, nr Derby". Also in the household were their children Alice M, (21) Martha E, (19) Mary A, (17) and John E. (9)[2]

The 1881 census shows John & Mary Ann living at 314 Liverpool Road, where Mary Ann gave her occupation as stationer. They had two children at home: Mary Ann, (27) and John Edwin. (19)[11]

Mary Ann died in Barton Upon Irwell on the 20th November 1889, aged 65 years.[12] she was buried at Barton Wesleyan Methodist chapel yard, Barton Road on the 23rd November 1889. Her cause of death was "Heart Disease".[13][14]
