Biography

Elizabeth Weber was born on 12 June 1880 in Buffalo, New York[1]. She was the daughter of German immigrants Jacob Weber and Catharina Gräbel.

She grew up learning the craft of basketmaking, according to her granddaughter Rita[2], an occupation that both the Webers and Gräbels practiced going back to Germany.

She married Edward Hilburger in about 1903. They had three children:

  1. Margaret b. 1905
  2. Edward b. 1908
  3. Hildegard b. 1912

They were living at 870 Jefferson when a fire broke out in the middle of the night on Apr. 3, 1907, caused by a defective chimney, resulting in $400 in damage[3].

In 1910, she is recorded on the census as a 30-year-old, living with her husband Edward, two children, her parents, and her brother Charles at 870 Jefferson in Buffalo[4]. Her husband was a Press Feeder (Lithograph) and her father a Willow Worker (Own Shop), still working at 70 years old; her brother was also a Willow Worker (Willow Shop).

Elizabeth passed away on 23 October 1960 in Buffalo, New York[5]. She was buried at the United German & French Cemetery in Cheektowaga[6].

Research Notes

She likely married at her home parish of St. Boniface, which is where she was baptized and her three children were baptized per a Baptism Index for the parish, but marriage records after 1899 were not digitized and may not be available. An initial search in an Erie County marriage index did not find her and Edward, so it's possible their names were misspelled or mistranscribed at the city or county level.

DNA: One of Elizabeth's grandchildren and multiple great-grandchildren DNA tested, confirming her parents' identity[7].
