Biography

Dan Welsh was born to unknown parents, likely in England, before 1635.[1] Dan settled in Lancaster County, Virginia Colony, by 1655. Lancaster County taxed him based on his labor force, assessing him for two tithables, 6 Feb 1655.[2] for two tithables. 7 Dec 1655,[3] for four tithables, 5 Nov 1656,[4] for an obscured number of tithables, 16 Dec 1657,[5] for four tithables, 31 Oct 1658,[6] for four tithables, 30 Nov 1659,[7] and for five tithables, 15 Nov 1660.[8]

He passed away in 1661.

Research Notes

  • Info. on Elizabeth (Unknown) Welsh/Chattin’s WikiTree profile that I adopted:

In the records of Thomas Chattin, the surname has many alternative spellings. It has been attempted to use the name as it appears on the record. Thus the different spellings below are not a mistake.

The maiden name of Elizabeth Welsh is unknown. She was previously married to Dan Welsh who died in 1661 and was a wife of Thomas Chatwyn in 8 Nov 1665 Lancaster County of Virginia Colony. Please see the biography of spouse Thomas Chattin for more details and references. It would appear that she had 4 children with her in 1663 according to Lindburgh, page 1-2, and the tax list of Lancaster for Thomas Chatwyn showing that Thomas and Elizabeth were probably married in 1663. It would also appear that most of Thomas' children are hers except for one which might be John, Thomas' eldest son. His birth year is unknown and all the others have birth years of 1665 and later.

To add more confusion to the wives names for Thomas, there is an 2 Aug 1722 will for Elizabeth Chatwin in Lancaster. Lindburg, page 5, shows that this will is not for the wife of Thomas, Elizabeth Welsh, but more likely the wife of his son John who also married an Elizabeth. The Elizabeth of this 1722 will mentions her mother and father-in-law. Elizabeth Welsh had 4 children in 1661 and certainly was over 20 years old, making her over age 82 in 1722. Her mother certainly would not be living in 1722. Many researchers mistakenly use this date as her death date, but error in doing so. All that can be proved is that Elizabeth Welsh was living at Thomas Chatwyn's probate of 13 Jun 1699.

The vital records for White Chapel Parish in Lancaster have been lost. Some of these vital dates have been established from other civil records, but many have not.
