Biography

Elizabeth (White) Phillips was born in Appalachia, in Tennessee.

Elizabeth White was born out of wedlock to Nancy Brown and John White. Nancy brought charges for child maintenance against him in Washington County Circuit Court, received $45.00 judgement. However, John White skipped out on payment, leaving no tangible assets. Nancy later married Joseph Ball, who raised her daughter Elizabeth as his own.

John White (son of Christian White Jr. and Elizabeth Stonebraker) was born in 1770 in VA or PA. He died on August 4, 1850 in Embreeville, Washington County, TN. He sired Nancy Brown’s daughter Elizabeth out of wedlock, fled Washington County jurisdiction to avoid payment of child maintenance. Circuit court at Carter County ordered property there to be seized to satisfy judgement. Later he was charged for horse stealing, along with his brother William. John was acquitted, but William was sentenced to hang.

Joseph Ball fought in the War of 1812, serving as a private in Captain Andrew Lawson’s Company, Colonel William Johnson’s 3rd Regiment, East Tennessee Militia. He entered service September 30, 1814 at Knoxville, Tennessee and was honorably discharged at Mobile, Alabama May 3, 1815. He later received bounty land and a pension for his service. At his death, he was widowed and was survived by nine children mentioned in his estate record along with a deceased daughter, Mary Moore, who was the mother of five children, a deceased son, Abraham Ball, who was the father of two children. In his will, he identifies Elizabeth White Ball Phillips -his wife’s first child that was born out of wedlock and sired by John White. [1]
