Biography

Noelani C. writes of her ancestor, "We know that Fred Whitten was born in Maine, specifically the area of Blue Hill, ME. We know that his occupation was a jeweler. ... We also know that Fred had a brother Henry."

Fred's father, Samuel, was a watchmaker/jeweler.

The 1884 city directory for Fitchburg, Massachusetts, lists Fred and Samuel living at Summer and Cane streets. Fred is working as a painter, Samuel as jeweler. The 1885 directory lists Fred as having moved to West Boylston. Fred does not appear in any later Fitchburg city directories.

He married Bertha in 1887[1] and their daughter May was born in 1888.

This was apparently his second marriage. His son Thomas was born in 1883. His first wife Emma may have died soon after.

In 1900, at the time of the census, Fred (38) and his wife Bertha (34) are living with their 12-year-old daughter May in Westerly, Rhode Island. [2] We know this is the same Frederick because he was born in Maine.

At the time of the 1910 census, Frederick (49), Bertha (43), and May (20) are still in Westerly. [3]

Frederick and Bertha appear in the 1920 census in Memphis, Tenn. Fred is 58 and Bertha is 54. [4]

Research Notes

This is not Frederick W Whitten (abt.1861-), husband of Nellie Goding, also born in Maine, probably the son of George and Sarah.

Fred I believe was born in either the late 1850s to early 1860s because he had a son born in 1883, and was married in the early 1880s.

I have found records that he was divorced in 1889/1890 from Emma Saunders. After that, the records are gone. There is no record of him after 1889.
