Husband of Margaret.
Was a member of the first party to erect the Overland Telegraph line in the Northern Territory.
OBITUARY. Mr. John Wigzell, one of the oldest residents of the Mount Barker district, died on Friday, it the age of 91. He arrived in Australia at the age of 12, with his parents, in 1849. He was born at Seven Oaks, England, and was to have emigrated to America with his father, but the plans were changed and a new home was established in Australia at Littlehampton. He was married in St. Paul's Church, Adelaide, on May 9, 1861, to Miss Margaret Fee (who came from County Kevern, North Ireland) by Dean Russell. Mr. Wigzell was a member of the party that began to construct the overland telegraph line to Darwin. The expedition was a failure. The country was entirely unknown, and although there was abundance of grass the cattle would not eat it, and the party had to come back. The work was carried out later by the Government. Mr. Wigzell was a remarkably healthy man, and it is only within the last twelve months that his legs would not permit him to get about and be had to take to his bed. He retained his faculties, however, to the last, although he was slightly deaf and short sighted. He enjoyed nothing better than a smoke and a yarn with old acquaintances. He had vivid recollections of the early days, and told a good story well. In 1860 he joined the Loyal Brittania Lodge, and was associated with it longer than any other member. Mrs. WigzelI, who is still alive and well, and is ten days older than her husband was, is a remarkable figure, doing her housework, and no one would take her to be so old. There were nine children, but only three are alive now. They are Mrs. Wilson (Northam, Western Australia), Miss Wigzell (Littlehampton), and Mr. Edwin Wigzell (Broken Hill).
