Claude Russell "Wil" Wilburn, Jr., age 71, went to be with his Lord Jesus Christ on Independence Day 2007, after a courageous battle with cancer.
He was born Jan. 10, 1936, in Fort Smith, Ark., to Claude, Sr. and Vivian Wilburn, and grew up in the Houston, Texas, area.
Wil served in both the U.S. Marine Corps and U.S. Army. He married Carol Miller on March 19, 1960, in Albuquerque, N.M.
Wil's career in radio and communications took him to many locations in the Southwest and then to Montana in 1974. He retired from AT&T in 1999.
Wil had many hobbies. Those he loved best were ham radio and playing the guitar and harmonica with his fellow bluegrass pickers.
Wil is survived by his wife, Carol of Helena; children, Nathan Wilburn, Sr.(WA7GQF) (Tamara) of Great Falls, Holly Harris (Harvey) of Cut Bank; grandchildren, Kathryn Hensley (Jon), Kristopher Harris, Ben Harris, Nathan Wilburn, Jr. and Ethan Wilburn; sisters, Alice Fails of Texas, and Nancy Miller of Arizona.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Alfred Wilburn and David Wilburn.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday, July 9, at the First Assembly of God Church in Helena. Interment with military honors will follow at the Montana State Veterans Cemetery. In lieu of flowers and because the Wilburn family was a recipient of similar veterans housing during Wil's final illness, donations are suggested to the Liberty House at Fort Harrison.[2]
