GOVERNOR MOSES WISNER Moses Wisner , the twelfth Governor of Michigan , was the son of Col. Moses Wisner , the son of Lieutenant Thomas , who served in the Revolutionary War , who in turn was the son of Adam , the son of Johanes , the first member of the Swiss family of Wisners to settle in America. Governor Wisner was born in Aurelius , Cayuga county , N. Y. , in 1815 , and received a good education . In 1839 , he moved to Michigan and settled upon a farm near the town of Atlas, Lapeer county . A year later he removed to Pontiac and stud ied law , being admitted to the Bar in 1842. The following year he was appointed Prosecuting Attorney for Lapeer county and within a year he resigned that position, and resumed the practice of law , which he continued until 1858 , when he was elected Governor of the State . His administration was mem orable for its activity in developing the internal resources of the State . He was a candidate for Judge of the Circuit Court in 1852 , but was defeated. He had a fine mind and vigorous personality. His term as Governor was for two years . At its expiration he was appointed a colonel in the volunteer army and was assigned to command of the 22nd Regiment of Michigan , serving with the Union forces . While on the way to the seat of war with his troops , Colonel Wisner was stricken by sickness in Lexington , Ky . , where he died January 5 , 1863 . Moses Wisner was twice married . He was married to Sarah Richardson in 1844 , and they had one child, Edward M. Wis ner . His first wife lived only a few years and in 1848 , he married Angelina Hascall . They had two sons , Judge Charles H. Wisner , of Flint , Mich . , and Frank Wisner , and one daughter , Jessie Wisner . In Volume LII , Part I , in the series of books entitled “ War of the Rebellion , Official Records of the Union and Confeder ate Armies , ” | we find this report on the death of Col. Moses Wisner , the Governor of Michigan , on page 319 : General Orders No. 2 . HEADQUARTERS , ARMY OF KENTUCKY Lexington , Ky , Jan. 5 , 1863 . It is with deep regret that the major - general commanding announces to this army the death of Col. Moses Wisner , of the Twenty - second Michigan Volunteer Infantry , who at 5 A. M. today departed this life near the City of Lexington , Ky . The deceased was appointed colonel of the regiment that now so sadly mourns his loss on the 8th day of August , A. D. 1862 . Before entering the service he was a resident of Pon tiac , State of Michigan . Although he was yet a young man at the time of his death , he had already occupied the most responsible political position in his State , having been Gov ernor of the State of Michigan from A. D. 1858 to 1860 . When his country called for men to fight her battles , he cheerfully gave up the honors and peaceful pursuits of the citizen to undergo the hardships and privations of the soldier's life . He died in camp , absent from the comforts of home , but surrounded by the soldiers who loved him , dying with the proud consciousness of having faithfully served his country in this her hour of peril . Thus closes an honorable and useful life of a true patriot , a good soldier and a courteous gentleman . The regimental colors of the Twenty - second Regiment Michigan Volunteer Infantry will be draped in mourning , and the officers of the First Brigade , Second Division , of this army will wear the usual badge of mourning for thirty days . By order of MAJ . - Gen . G. GRANGER . WILLIAM E. RUSSELL , Captain and Assistant Adj . - General .
