Biography
Joel was born in 1844. He is the son of Bryant Wooten and Jincy Lee. He passed away in 1865.

Confederate States Army Records: "Joel W. Wooten; Residence Coffee County, Georgia; Enlisted 22 Mar 1862 as a private in Co. C, 50th GA Vol Infantry. Age at enlistment, 18 years old. Promoted to 5th Sergt. 15 Feb 1864.
Received by Provost Marshall at Washington DC on 24 Jan 1865 as POW. Took Oath of Allegiance 24 Jan 1865 at Washington D.C. Sent 24 Jan 1865 to Jacksonville, FL. "
After surrendering, Joel and his brother, Simon Lee Wooten, had to march with their comrades to Jacksonville, FL for release. During this march, Joel was ill. Simon was able to go with Joel to the Union Hospital at Hilton Head, SC, on Feb. 14,1865. Joel died the next day and Simon Lee had to return to the march. Hospital officials took charge of Joel's burial at a nearby military cemetery. I am still searching for his exact burial location.
Joel was in the same company as his brothers, Simon Lee Wooten and William Jordan Wooten, who died soon after the war began in 1862.
