William was an English poet and dramatist of the Restoration period. He was baptized on 8 April 1641 in Whitchurch, Hampshire, the son of Daniel Wycherley (1617–1697) and Bethia (c.1618–1700), daughter of William Shrimpton. He entered the Inner Temple aged eighteen in October 1659.
On 29 September 1679 he married secretly Letitia Isabella Robartes, eldest daughter of John Robartes the 1st Earl of Radnor and widow of Charles Moore the 2nd Earl of Drogheda. She died by July 1685.
On 20 December 1715 Wycherley, ill, feebly protesting and begging for a physician, was brought to sign a jointure and marry by special licence young Elizabeth, daughter of Joseph Jackson[1], who was mistress of a cousin, Captain Thomas Shrimpton.
Wycherley died at Mrs Armstrong's lodging house, Bow Street, about 3 a.m. on 1 January 1716, and was buried on 5 January in the vault of St Paul's Church, Covent Garden.
