Biography

Hartmann I and his brother Ludwig III were probably the sons of Ludwig II, Graf (Count) von Württemberg and his wife Williberg von Kirchberg.[1] Hartmann was perhaps born about 1160[2] although there is no evidence to confirm this date. He was probably the elder brother as he is named first in a charter that names both brothers, but they seemed to have ruled as Grafs (Counts) von Württemberg together.

There is a suggestion that one brother may have ruled in Württemberg, while the other accompanied the Emperor of that period in various travels. For instance Ludwig is cited taking part in the conquest of Sicily in 1194 and Hartmann was present at the coronation of Otto IV in Rome on 4 October 1209.[3] Both of them signed a charter of Friedrich II, King of Germany on 31 March 1213, but only Hartmann seems to have witnessed another charter dated 13 February 1239.[4] He appears to have died in 1240 or 1241.

He married an unnamed woman of the Veringen family, the daughter of Wolfrad I von Vergingen, Graf von Veringen and his wife Berchun[5] The Wikipedia articles about Hartmann calls her the heir of the County of Veringen but this seems unlikely given she appears to have a brother with children according to Cawley (2011b) though she might have brought some territory to her husband as part of her dowry.

All sources mention a son Konrad, who is the ancestor of the line of Counts of Grüningen-Landau, but there is also thought to be a second son Hermann, (now thought to be the ancestor of the following Counts of Württemberg) and Stoyan lists two daughters. These children are:

  1. Elisabeth von Württemberg;
  2. Konrad von Württemberg-Grüningen
  3. Daughter (unnamed)
  4. Hermann von Württemberg

Both of his sons seemed to have died before Hartmann and he was probably succeeded by his grandsons.
