Hi WikiTreers,

Welcome to a new installment of “Meet our Members.” It’s time to get to know another awesome member of our community: Meet Hilary.

Hilary Gadsby has been a WikiTreer since July of 2011.  She’s one of our friendly Greeters and is quite active in our England and Wales projects, among others.

What are some of the surnames you are researching?

BUCKLE, GADSBY, ROSLING as One Name Studies on WikiTree also ROBERTS, WARD, WITT, CROWSON, WILTSHIRE, TUDGEY, GINGELL

What are some of the locations you are researching?

Main location England, Counties – Hampshire, Dorset, Wiltshire, Rutland, Lincolnshire, Leicestershire, Norfolk

When and how did you get interested in genealogy and family history?

When I lost my father, at the turn of the century, and then discovered some certificates in a suitcase which had belonged to my husband’s grandfather, I decided I needed to learn more.

Who’s your favorite ancestor and why?

I don’t have a favourite but love finding more about them. I found one in prison and I wanted to know why she was there.

Tell us about a brick wall you were able to break down or one you hope to bust through.

My aunt told me about a child that died very young and she was not sure whose it was or when. I checked for any missing births when the GRO indexes with mother’s maiden name were made available for earlier years. I discovered that my grandfather had not been the eldest but his older brother had been premature and not survived.

What are some of your interests outside of genealogy?

Enjoy visiting historical places and reading but most of my interests are related to genealogy.

How long have you been on WikiTree and what do you spend the most time doing? If you’re  involved in a project(s), tell us about how you participate in it.

I joined in July 2011. I spend time on WikiTree Greeting new members and cleaning up and sourcing profiles covered by the England Project. I also enjoy joining in with some of the challenges. I joined the Cemeteries project but have not found time to set up and upload to the English cemeteries I have visited.

I am:

What brought you to WikiTree?

Don’t remember but I probably heard about it from online genealogy friends.

What is your favorite thing about WikiTree, or which feature(s) do you like the most?

I find using the RootsSearch integration very helpful for improving the tree.

I like the new videos being produced for the Data Doctors.

If you could improve one thing about WikiTree, what would it be?

Guidance on sourcing needs to be more prominent as many think they have added a source when all they add is the title of a record group.

What is an example of how WikiTree has helped you with your genealogy or how you’ve helped genealogy with WikiTree?

I have made cousin connections and found others to help with my One Name Study.

Any tips for someone just starting out on WikiTree?

Go slow and make the most of others who may have more time than you do.

  1. Having only just come across “Meet our Members”, I’ve enjoyed reading about everyone. I am still very new to Wikitree, and I love the concept. As a frustrated Ancestry member too, I agree about the importance of sources. I’ve had dna matches on Ancestry with people who have assured me they have researched thoroughly but when I check their sources it’s just a continual link to other people’s trees. I want to see the documents. I am still unsure if I am doing it right on Wikitree though. So much of my evidence is in paper form, and it feels mean saying private collection. Does anyone ever actually upload images of documents?
